B.E.T.T KZN - April 2012 Sterkfontein Dam

morning

The fourth leg of the KZN B.E.T.T trail continued the excitement from the March 31 event, creating a back-to-back Sterkfontein Dam competition that also freed up the last weekend in April for the annual Inanda Dam Classic.

Located 1700m above sea-level and close to the KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State boarder, Sterkfontein Dam is South Africa's third-largest dam.

After experiencing difficult weather conditions on Saturday, the competitive field dwindled on Sunday as competitors threw in the towel and headed home.

Those brave enough to take on Sterkfontein back-to-back, were in high spirits, predicting overcast but dry conditions. Hence, with mixed expectations, competitors race off to tackle this mighty dam for a second time.

As competitors were to fish a shortened seven-hour day, they wasted little time on unproductive spots, constantly changing their locations while making up their limits.

When the cloud cover lifted at mid-morning, it was backed by the wind to cause small wave actions. Many competitors hoped this change would entice more activity among the fish, but the post-frontal "lock jaw" was not making for easy Bass angling. If the results were based on the first day's fishing, average bag weights would be a little over 2kgs. All competitors knew it would take one kicker fish to put them in the prizes!

Having done just that, and with a bag weight of 3.46kgs, Neville Reis and Brian Dimock from Team Dabmar Manufacturing, made their first podium finish this year to take top spot.

1st

Only 345g less were Grant Hewitt and Andrew Read of Team Ruffthumb Skov, followed by Zayne Kemp and Garth Liefeldt from Team Strike King Z-Man who placed third with 2.92kgs.
